Almost all of us have felt like we have failed at times. True to our nature, as we understand from an Islamic perspective, the human being is meant to make mistakes, including before Allah, subhanahu wa tala. The question is, however, how are we to understand these momentary failures?
Sometimes, due to a moment of perceived failure, a person will develop the belief that they can fail, and become afraid, to the extent their fear of failure begins to sabotage their success. When this happens, they lose out on a lot of opportunities, and suffer from a lot of undue anxiety and stress.
Here is a quick exercise you can do that will give you a new way of looking at a past failure.
1) On a piece of paper, write down one example of a time you felt you have failed.
2) Now write the word QADR above that memory, as a reminder that whatever has happened in our past, had to happen.
3) Looking to that memory: come up with 5 great things that have resulted because of this “failure.”
4) When you complete the list, create a new empowering statement like , “Because I “failed” at this, I have since become better because…. ”
A lot of times, people get stuck in step number three. So, a hands on workshop, or coaching exercise where someone guides you through this can be of great benefit.
Failures often have hidden within them some of the greatest gems you could ever collect about life, and the potential within you. Everything… eveeerythiiiing comes down to your perception.
Thomas Edison failed more than 1,000 times when
trying to create the light bulb Edison allegedly said, “I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb.”
An an even stronger anchor for us is that Adam and Hawa were forgetful of Allah, and slipped while in the garden. To us, this could seem like total self destruction, the ultimate failure in this life, and yet Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom and Mercy knew this would happen. As a result of this, forever after all of us have learned what our nature is, who our enemy is, how Forgiving Allah is, how to make taubah, and to trust that Allah will never ever leave us to oursevles so long as we follow Islam.
